This is your chance to get comments from me about the
direction your paper is taking—don’t miss out on it! Papers improve when students use this workshop to get advice
before they write their papers.
NOTE: This assignment may be simpler than you expect;
in short, you need only one sentence for each paragraph you plan on having. So, if you have 18 paragraphs, this outline need
be only--18 sentences.
What
is an outline?
*the MAIN POINTS
or the CLAIMS for each paragraph in your paper
*in FULL SENTENCES
*without evidence,
sources, transitions.
Each point is just an assertion — each assertion
requires evidence -- what you add when you write your first draft; evidences includes your experience, your sources [statistics,
examples, testimony].
TIPS:
1. Each paragraph should make one complete point
or claim--No More Than ONE!
2. Make sure they don’t repeat --keep the
paragraphs discrete.
3. Keep wording the same to simplify and stay organized.
Topic sentence 4: “One cause of the drug
problem is economic.”
Topic sentence 5: “Another cause of the drug
problem is a lack of policing.”
4. A topic sentence might also be a refutation.
You will anticipate objections to your argument in an attempt to refute them.
“One proposed
solution to the drug problem, which I believe will not work, is the incarceration of non-violent addicts.”
5. Keep like topics together-- lump causes with causes;
effects with effects; solutions with solutions. Use the color coding system if you find it helpful.
