ENGLISH 102 PROFESSOR MARY T. CONWAY

ESSAY #1: Your Learning Styles Preferences

Before you write, you will take a test (don’t worry—No Studying!) and read about the theory behind the test. You will do the test on-line, but you will also print out both documents (test and explanation). We will be in the computer lab for part of our preparation for this paper.

Step One:

Take the On-Line Test

http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/learningstyles/ilsweb.html

Print out your results.

Step Two: READ the explanation that accompanies the test:

Explanation of your Learning Styles and Strategies

http://www.ncsu.edu/felder-public/ILSdir/styles.htm

NOW, IT’S TIME TO WRITE ABOUT WHAT YOU’VE LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF…

PARA ONE

Introduce the paper with an interesting story or concept (Handbook for guidance).

            Provide a complete thesis.

PARA TWO

Describe and explain the theory of learning styles—your sources are our class discussion and the 2nd webpage above. Make sure you paraphrase or use quotations to avoid plagiarizing. Use detail in your explanations.

PARA THREE

Describe and explain the dimensions/scales you learned about from the second webpage. Use detail and examples.

PARA FOUR

Describe your own results. Fully explain your scores and the interpretation of the scores. Relate these results to both your past experience as a student, and your future as a student.

PARA FIVE

Conclude with an interesting story or concept (perhaps return to the original in para 1). Recap the thesis.

BEFORE YOU TURN YOUR PAPER IN:

  1. Re-read the list of requirements from the syllabus—make sure you meet ALL of them. **Any paper with more than 2 “typos” on page 1 will be returned. NO credit given for work below the college level. Remember, a typo is not always the same as a pattern of grammar or spelling error—it’s the dirty t-shirt at the job interview.
  2. Approximately 2 paragraphs per page.
