DELIVERY

A KEY ELEMENT THAT SEPARATES SPEECHES FROM WRITING

THERE ARE FOUR TYPES OF DELIVERY:

1. MEMORIZATION

2. READING FROM A PREPARED TEXT WORD FOR WORD

3. IMPROMPUTU (Name, Explain, Support, Conclude)

4. EXTEMPORANEOUS

EXTEMPORANEOUS IS THE DELIVERY WE WILL USE IN MOST SPEECHES

It is the BEST delivery style to master, because it is:

--the most flexible

--the most powerful

--comprehensive, in that it uses elements of the other 3

--allows for communicating complex ideas with full engagement with the audience with eye contact (Aristotle: "The eyes are the mirror of the soul."

EXTEMPORANEOUS

--blends conversational and formal qualities

--depends upon practice (like most worthwhile tasks, A.I. not withstanding)

--uses a system of notes to yourself, with some parts written out fully

YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL ESSAY THAT WANTS TO BECOME A SPEECH?

Take the Seven Step Approach to excellent Delivery

1. With a highlighter, mark the KEY CONCEPTS (usually nouns and verbs).

2. Practice once (1st) with this marked up paper.

3. Transfer these highlighted words to either cue cards, or cut and paste into a new document.

4. Practice again (2nd) with BOTH the marked up paper AND new key concept cards or paper in your view. Focus on the new key concepts card more; but consult the old paper if you get stuck.

5. Add items to the new cards if you get stuck or need prompting. You might need more info on a card, a note to yourself to slow down, speed up, look up, repeat, etc.

6. Practice (3rd) with these new, marked up cards.

TIME yourself. If you err, continue. If the speech is too long or short, edit to meet time limits.

7. Practice (4th). The next time you give the speech, your 5th time, will be the best delivery yet.

IMPORTANT

1. Number your cards.

2. Use only one side; it is too confusing otherwise and cards are cheap!

3. Write largely.

4. Write clearly.

5. Key concepts only, except as noted below.

OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION OF PRESENCE OF CUE CARD CONSTABLE

Because most people don't trust themselves or the process of converting to extemporaneous delivery, and because the only way to learn how is to do, you have an added incentive to use the process outlined above:

YOUR CUE CARDS (or outline) WILL BE EXAMINED BEFORE YOU GO TO THE PODIUM. IF THEY HAVE EVERY SENTENCE WRITTEN OUT, WORD FOR WORD, YOU WILL BE GIVEN NEW BLANK CARDS WITH WHICH TO CONVERT TO EXTEMPORANOUS.

This is an uncomfortable situation and should be avoided. When you get to the podium, you want YOUR cue cards that you've practiced with 4 times previously.

Therefore make sure you write down only:

1.key concepts, not full sentences

2. full sentences ARE permitted in INTRO, CONCLUSION, LONG OR DIFFICULT QUOTATIONS
